Each month, ORMTA will be sharing some of the tools that are available to music teachers and students.

ORMTA members are welcome to suggest resources. If you have used a website, blog, app, book, newsletter, webinar, workshop, tool, etc. that would help build professional development within our membership, please let us know by emailing professionaldevelopment@ormta.org. We aim to include Ontarian or Canadian content in each issue.

International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP)

The International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP), also known as the Petrucci Music Library, is an online platform offering a vast collection of free public-domain scores and related resources. Users can access this repository by searching for composers, titles, or keywords. The platform provides detailed information about compositions, including different editions and arrangements. Once users find the desired sheet music, they can easily download PDF files for offline use or printing.

IMSLP operates through contributions and donations, making it a collaborative resource for musicians, composers, and music enthusiasts worldwide. Access IMSLP here

Soundscapes

Soundscape is an immersive music visualizer that lets users build their own soundscapes. The website currently offers three visually-engaging environments, each with their own base soundscape. The users can then change the rhythm, add bass lines, harmony, and melody to the existing sound environment.

Another soundscape digital resource, Soundescape is a free website that provides “3-dimensional, generative sound environments that help you focus, relax or sleep.” The website allows you to choose from soundscape options such as “Rocky Beach,” “Quiet Jazz Bar,” “Coffee Shop,” or you can create your own soundscape.

Both of these online tools could be a great exercise for students to explore emotion in music and how compositions come together or change to produce different effects.
