Ontario Young Artist Tour 2007

Eric Tan

Winner of the 2007 Provincial Young Artist Competition held in Mississauga, July 2007.


Fifteen year old Eric Tan is this years Young Artist.  He began studying piano at the age of seven and has performed both as a soloist and in ensemble at various events including Roy Thomson Hall’s Open House, and at the Glenn Gould Theatre for the Ontario Trillium Foundation (which he did at the age of 10).

A busy performer and competitor, Eric won first place in the Canadian Music Competition 2007 National Final (16 years and under age category).  This year he has also received an Honourable Mention in the OMFA Provincial finals (June), captured first prize in the Grand Prize Competition in the ALL TV Music Festival in May and he received the David Ouchterlony Memorial Award/Scholarship for the Most Promising Piano Student in the GTA Kiwanis.

Eric was the grand winner of the Central Toronto ORMTA Spring Senior Honours Recital in 2006 and he also won first prize in the overall piano senior division in the ALL TV Music Festival in 2006. Eric has received First Class Honours with Distinction on his RCM grades 9 and 10 piano as well as all of his theory examinations over the past two years. He is currently studying for his ARCT in piano performance with Gloria Saarinen.  Eric is the official accompanist for Dixon Hall Music School Choir and his high school’s concert choir. He is currently enrolled in a grade 9 gifted program.

Apart from playing piano, Eric has an interest in composing and has written three piano solo pieces as well as a trio for violin, cello and piano.  He likes to take challenges such as entering math and writing contests.  He also enjoys reading, playing chess and sports. c
