The annual ORMTA competitions are the most celebrated competitions, which have provided a vital stepping stone for performing careers of many fine musicians.
The following are the various entry classes:
Provincial Student Instrumental (Grade 10 &/or Associate Level)
Provincial Student Vocal (Grade 9 and above)
Young Artist (post-Associate Level)
Competitions take place at three levels: the local Branch, Zone, and Provincial. To compete at the Provincial Level, the candidate must have first successfully competed at the Branch and Zone levels.
National Finals are for the Provincial Young Artist winner every other year and sponsored by CFMTA. The Young Artist class is the most prestigious level of our competitions. During the year of National Finals, the Young Artist winner also receives a tour hosted by various branches within Ontario. During the off year, the Young Artist winner received a concert debut hosted by their home city.
There is also a Junior Class which branches may host as a preamble towards the senior classes. This class only participates at the Branch and Zone competition level.

Adjudicators consideration in choosing Young Artist winner:
~ Elaine Keillor (2006 adjudicator)
"As a former Young Artist (1959-60) it is my privilege to give our decision regarding the ORMTA Young Artist’s Competition for 2006. I was one of the very few CFMTA Young Artists that had the opportunity to tour Canada from coast-to-coast with some sixty concerts. It was such a wonderful learning experience – having the opportunity to play the same program a number of times, learning how to pace oneself when one week might have at least five recitals plus radio and TV interviews and involve hundreds of miles traveling by train, bus, car and occasionally plane.
What we were looking for tonight was a musician who was ready for this opportunity of touring and at the same time a pianist who could give the prospective audiences a really thrilling musical experience in a range of repertoire. I am glad to report that we did find such a performer, but I will begin with announcing the runner-up. That runner-up will take on the responsibility of the tour if by any chance our chosen Young Artist is unable to fulfill its demands because of unforeseen circumstances."
