Music Writing Competition

 

Guidelines:

1. A student may enter more than one composition and more than one class but only one prize will be awarded to any individual.

2. The contestant must be eligible in his/her chosen age group as of June 1, 2008.

3. Each entry is assumed to be the original work of the individual whose name appears on the entry form attached to the manuscript. Any infraction of this regulation could result in nullification of the offending entry.

4. All competitors will receive a written adjudication of their work.

5. All rights to his/her original work will be retained by the competitor, but winning compositions may be displayed or employed by the ORMTA. and CFMTA for publicity purposes after consultation with and agreement of the Competitor.

6. Manuscripts should reach the Ontario Chairperson (as indicated on the entry form) no later than March 15, 2007. Only first place winning manuscripts at the provincial level will be forwarded to CFMTA for national adjudication to reach there no later than June 1, 2007 For Canada-wide judging.

7. Competitors must be students of members of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association.

8. All manuscripts should be neat and legibly written in black ink on 8-1/2 x 11 manuscript size and should include all necessary details of dynamics, editing and tempi, with every tenth bar numbered. Manuscripts printed by computers are permitted, as ore good quality photocopies of original manuscripts. It is advisable to retain the original copy of your submitted work. The student’s name must be included on each composition. The teacher’s name must not appear on the composition. A recording of the composition may be included if desired.

9. Only fully completed entries will be accepted.

10. The adjudicator’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into after final judging. The Following adjudication standards will be applied: FIRST Place - minimum mark of 90, SECOND Place - minimum mark of 85, THIRD Place - minimum mark of 80.

11. All entrants who move after July 1 must advise their ORMTA Music Writing Competition Chairperson of their change of address, including postal code.

12. Winners’ cheques must be cashed within thirty days of issue.

13. An entry fee is required for the Ontario Level Competition. Please refer to entry form for fees per class. This fee includes the $ 10 subsequently submitted to the CFMTA with winning and meritorious entries. Competitors may submit provincial entries in the categories listed below.

14. Competitors wishing to enter an “Electronic Music” category should send their entries directly to the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations (CFMTA), using the entry form supplied in the CFMTA Canada Music Week Magazine. This category includes any kind of electrical instrument which produces sound such as a computer, digital piano, synthesizer, etc. It would not include using computer software to construct an accompanying bass, additional parts for voices or additional instruments. 15. In keeping with National Competition policy, no student may place first in any one category for two consecutive years.

 

CLASSES AVAILABLE

CLASS A-I - 11 YEARS AND UNDER
An original composition for solo instrument or any combination of instruments. The music must be composed entirely by the child but may be written down by an adult.

CLASS A-2 - 11 YEARS AND UNDER
An original composition for voice(s) with or without accompaniment. The music must be composed entirely by the child but may be written down by an adult.

CLASS 8-1 - 15 YEARS AND UNDER
An original composition for solo instrument or any combination of instruments. The music should be scored entirely by the student.

CLASS 8-2 - 15 YEARS AND UNDER
An original composition for voice(s) with or without accompaniment. The music should be scored entirely by the student.

CLASS C- 19 YEARS AND UNDER
An original composition for any instrument or combination instruments, voice(s) or combination of voice(s) and instrument with accompaniment when accompaniment is necessary performance. The music should be scored entirely by the student.

CLASS D - OPEN
All original composition for any instrument or combination of instruments, or voice(s) or combination of voice(s) and instruments with accompaniment when accompaniment is required for performance. The music should be scored entirely by the student.
