Each month, ORMTA will be sharing some of the tools that are available to music teachers and students.

ORMTA members are welcome to suggest resources. If you have used a website, blog, app, book, newsletter, webinar, workshop, tool, etc. that would help build professional development within our membership, please let us know by emailing professionaldevelopment@ormta.org. We aim to include Ontarian or Canadian content in each issue.

Music Tutor Sight Reading

This app can be used on both Apple and Android Devices. There is a free and paid version. The paid version removes the Ads found in the App. Here, the student can use this App to practice learning how to read music notation and can test their knowledge in a game mode. The app is adjustable where students can pick their individual preferences and level of difficulty and it allows the student to practice reading notation in the treble, bass and alto clef.

Earpeggio

This ear training app can be downloaded via the App Store for iOS Devices. It allows students to identify intervals and play around with how you hear intervals. One of the options is “Interval Comparison” where you hear two intervals and you identify which is the larger interval. Another option is “Basic Melodic Dictation” where the student is given the starting note and has to identify the next few notes based on a played melody. Finally, the app has students practice “Basic Rhythm Dictation” where students write out the melody based on a rhythm that has been played. This is a fantastic app that will help students develop their ears leading to improvisation, and transcribing melodies and solos.
